Group 1 Project Proposal: Lord Fairfax Math Tutoring Center

Who are we working with?
Jenna Strother is the ACE Academic Support Programs Coordinator, and Jeremiah Dyke is the math consultant. He is also an instructor at LFCC and has volunteered to create video segments for various sections of the placement test material.

Audience
The math center's potential audience includes all LFCC students, specifically, adult learners in the following categories: new college student, former LFCC student, incoming transfer student, student attending full-time at another higher education institution, international student, high school student concurrently enrolled in college course(s), veteran, Workforce and Professional Development student seeking targeted career training, or teacher seeking credentialing or re-certification. This population's math ability and information needs will vary.

Context
Our design project, to be determined once our contact provides details, will be in support of the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Academic Center for Excellence math tutoring center. LFCC is located in Warrenton, Virginia and currently serves over 7,600 credit-seeking students enrolled in seventy-five associate degree and certificate programs, and more than 10,450 students who participate in professional development courses. New in 2013, LFCC's Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) offers an array of academic support services to all current students, including but not limited to free math tutoring for all levels of mathematics covered in the LFCC curriculum.

Over half of the LFCC student population doesn’t place into college level math, so they are required to take non-credit developmental courses. ACE wants to create a resource that can better help students prepare for the math placement test, since this test determines what initial math course they are able to enroll in. ACE also wants to help ensure student success by providing a realistic view of what to expect for the placement test. Ideally,  this resource will help students score as high as possible on the placement test; or, to at least test out of the first three developmental math units.

Proposed Solution
ACE proposes a project to incorporate video of Jeremiah (showing his face in order for students to connect with him as a real person) and record problems he is working out on a tablet. In this way, students can see how to work through problems while hearing audio of Jeremiah's explanations. As part of the video segments, they want sample questions to pop up for students to try and solve. If the students don’t answer correctly, then they want it to take them back to the beginning of that video segment. ACE would like all of this combined together into one video that they can refer students to.
